5 Tips That Will Help You Load Your Dumpster More Effectively

Posted on: 4 July 2016

If you are planning on renting a dumpster in order to help you clean up after a large project, you are going to want to make sure that you can fit as much waste into a single dumpster as you can to maximize your investment. Here are five tips that will help you load the dumpster you rent more effectively and get the most for your money.

#1 Plan Ahead For Strangely Shaped Items

The first thing you need to do is plan ahead for any strangely shaped items. If you have any large or odd-shaped items that you need to get rid of, identify these before you start cleaning things up. If this odd shaped item is really large, you'll want to make sure that it is the first thing that you put into your dumpster. Depending on the shape of the object, you may want to strategically place other items below it and on the side of it.

#2 Break Down All Items

Next, in order to maximize the space in your dumpster, make sure that you break everything down as much as possible. For example, if you have cardboard boxes that you need to throw away, break them down so they are flat. Or, if you have a table to throw away, remove all the legs so that the piece doesn't take up so much room in your dumpster. Look at each item you are going to throw away, and ask yourself if you can break it down or make it smaller in any way before you put it into the dumpster.

#3 Put Light-Weight Items Down Below

Third, make sure that you take light-weight items and put them in the bottom or middle of your dumpster. This will compress the light-weight items and will help ensure that they don't fly out of the dumpster and create a bigger mess for you.

#4 Try To Spread The Weight

Fourth, when adding items to your dumpster, think about how the weight is being distributed. You want to spread the weight around your dumpster so that all the heavy items are not in one place. If all the heavy items are together, your dumpster could tip or become unstable. Don't just throw everything into the closest end of your dumpster. Instead, make a concrete effort to add items and spread them out throughout your dumpster.

#5 Don't Compact The Debris On Your Own

If you follow the tips above, you should be able to get as much waste as possible into the dumpster you rent. If you discover that your dumpster is starting to creep over the top, though, be safe and order an extra dumpster. You can save money by ordering a smaller dumpster than you did the first time if you don't have that much waste left.
