Securing your construction site is important. Not only do you want to keep thieves and vandals away from the site and your equipment, but you need to keep people out altogether so that no one gets hurt. Fencing
The best way to keep people away from the dangers of your job site is to install commercial chain-link fencing. Commercial chain-link fences are typically a lot taller than residential chain-link fences so that they are difficult for people to climb over. Also, it comes in sectioned panels that aren't permanently placed in the ground. This way, the fencing can be removed once the job is complete. In addition to installing commercial chain-link fencing, you should also install high-quality locks on the gate to keep unwanted people out. Lights and Cameras
Thieves and vandals are less likely to hit a job site if there is a possibility that they might be seen. So, installing lights and video cameras throughout your job site will help to deter them. At the very least, you should have lighting and cameras installed around the perimeter of the job site.
Tools, Equipment, and Materials
If possible, keep all of the tools and materials that you leave at the job site in a secured area that is designated specifically for storage. You should also keep an inventory of all of the tools that you keep on site that includes pictures. This way, if you do have a loss, you'll have everything that you need to file an insurance claim. - Stamp all of your heavy equipment with tags and ID numbers to help you keep an inventory record of all of the heavy equipment that's on site at any given time. Also, post signs on the equipment stating that the ID numbers are recorded to help deter thieves.
- Immobilize your equipment when you leave the job site by using anti-theft devices, such as steering wheel locks.
- Establish a supervisory key control program for motorized equipment, and require employees to "check out" the equipment they use with the supervisor in charge of the keys. The supervisor also needs to make sure all of the keys are returned and the equipment is properly immobilized at the end of the work day.
