4 Habits To Get Into To Take Good Care Of Your Air Compressor

Posted on: 22 April 2015

Whether you use your air compressor a little bit or a lot, it can be easy to take these handy tools for granted. Luckily, they don't require a lot of care or maintenance, but taking proper care of your air compressor can help it last for a whole lot longer.

Luckily, getting into these regular habits will help you take good care of your air compressors:

1. Drain the Moisture

Throughout the course of the day, your air compressor can develop moisture inside of its tanks. If you leave the moisture there, it can contribute to mildew growth and other issues. Therefore, it's smart to clean out your air compressor's tanks each day when you are finished working.

Before doing so, make sure that you let out most of the air from the tanks. Then, the moisture should evaporate, which can help prevent mold, mildew and other problems.

2. Clean the Air Intake Vents

The air intake vents on your air compressor do a hard job, since they pull in air from the area around them to provide you with pressurized air. This can cause dirt to get into the air intake vents, or you could even deal with more serious clogs.

After ensuring that your air compressor is disconnected from its power source, it's smart to dust the air intake vents and get rid of any obstructions that you might see. This should be done at least once a week, but you might choose to do it more often if you work in a dusty or dirty environment.

3. Check Your Fittings

A fitting that does not fit securely and properly on your machine can cause reduced air pressure, among other issues. Therefore, on a regular basis, you should make a point to inspect all of your fittings to make sure that they fit well. You can also keep an eye on the gauges on your machine to check for lack of air pressure or other problems.

4. Check Your Cord

If your unit plugs into the wall and is powered by electricity, make sure that you keep a close eye on the power cord. These cords can become damaged with regular use, and you may need to replace the cord completely if you notice any cuts or other problems.

Taking good care of your air compressor will allow you to continue to enjoy it for a long time to come. Fortunately, making a habit out of these four tips can help you prevent issues with your unit.
